To users of the DVD : Historias de otro mundo en español

This tool, for use in a standard video and computer DVD reader is a new and efficient modern way to familiarize yourself with, and improve your comprehension and use of the Spanish language.

Its options menu features multilingual subtitling to use while watching the entire program or parts of it.

After the first overall "exploration", the DVD components will enable you to:

- Go back to specific sequences, with the rewind button.

- repeat or note down some words and phrases, using the pause.

- go quickly over the well known, or adquired ??? elements, using the fast forward.

Here are a few helpful tips :

At first use, get acquainted with the show hosts and guests, all of Latin-American background, through start to finish viewing of the program.

This will also give you good clues about some typical Spanish sounds, words and expressions. All your attention should focus on listening, so it might be a good idea to leave the subtitles blank at this point.

Next, you could listen to it again, using the pause button after each significant sequence or chapter.

EXAMPLE 1 :
After the repeated greeting sequences at the beginning of the show, using the pause will allow you to learn and practice the typical expressions: " Buenos dias, buenas tardes " , while being aware of the time of the day they are used. You may then pronounce them out loud and write them down (memory aid).

The same sequences can then be watched again, but with English subtitles, to ensure you the best comprehension possible.

EXAMPLE 2 :
The brief presentation of the first guest :
¿hola! ¿Cómo está? Bien gracias. Yo soy Rafael Hernandez y vengo de Colombia
can be watched two or three times - first without subtitles - then repeated aloud and in connection with yourself:

" yo soy Jean Tremblay y vengo de Canada".

Do the same with the following pieces of information :
" Mi nombre…es y soy…Mí profesión es…Estoy aqui en Canada…y mi estatus es…" etc.

The activities suggested in the student' s book: Mirando y Practicando will serve as reinforcement and enrichment of the DVD learning contents.

For example, activity 7, page 6, refers to the above-mentioned part of the show: presenting and introducing.

Besides, you can refer anytime to the transcript of the DVD at the end of the activity book, in order to clear up possible misunderstanding.

A useful lexicon relating to the instructions for each activity is found at the end of the student's book.

However, A English-Spanish dictionary and basic grammar are essential, having in mind that this course is not a grammar-based tool, but rather a new, dynamic and authentic communication skills -oriented materials.
